Review of games played on 05/05.

-With the season coming to a close only eight games were played.

In Division One Winston having finished their fixtures are champions but could Mountfield with three games to fit in before their two cup finals get the win that would give them the runners up spot. Well they did it without too many problems at home to Northenden FC. They led three nil at half time with goals from Dan Street, Reece Easton who could also claim the fourth when his shot found the net via a deflection.

Lostock Rangers went three nil up away at Man & Chorlton with goals from Dan Williams and an O.G. Tom Hargreaves pulled one back with a glancing header from Danny Murray’s cross who was also the provider for Francis Hill’s header to make it 3-2 which was the final score.

It was mixed fortunes for Chorlton’s Tom Hargreaves playing his last game for the club who he has served so well for many a season. I am sure Tom would have like his two goals to have been in the opponents net but I am sure he was forgiven afterwards. Enjoy your retirement you know you will miss it.

Sto Cosmos whose decline in the latter part of the season has caused concern within the club ended their season with a 2-1 defeat at home to Bramhall AFC who actually scored all three, giving Cosmos the lead with an O.G. Their second was from the penalty spot to equalise and the winner came from a close in header.

It is in Division Two where that has still to decide who will occupy the one and two positions. The top game of the day was between leaders Hillgate and third placed Edgeley Villa. A win for Hillgate would almost get both hands on the trophy. In a fast entertaining game action switched from end to end. Dale Hester got the ball rolling with his goal that gave Hillgate the lead. Soon after a run down the left by Howie Leech and a shot that hit the back of the Hillgate net made it all square. Scott Gaskell’s goal bound shot took a slight deflection to restore Hillgate’s lead. At the other end a Jordan Cunningham bounced of the top of the bar and out of play. The let off saw Hillgate increase their lead with Caden Sampson’s goal. Sampson then turned provider dinking a ball into the Villa area for Hester’s second goal. Daniel O’Hare then made it five one, but less than sixty seconds later Ollie Burgess got Villa’s second. Midway through the second half, Hillgate were awarded a penalty which Matty Smith stroked home. Ollie Burgess, made it 6-3, then produced a superb save from Leighton Bergano with a shot that was destined for the top left hand corner to deny him a hat trick. With their superior goal difference a point from their last two games will make them champions. Villa now drop to fourth.

Railway FC are now second following their 4-2 win over Cheadle Hulme Galaxy, Galaxy’s scorers were Sam Bassett and Mike Hutchison.

Third placed Sto.Vikings were comfortable winners at home to bottom club Woodhouse. Mike White with four goals was top scorer. Dylan Moloney (2) Sean Ryan, Marcus Purvis and Kieran Norris sharing the rest.

Fifth placed Northenden Town with still four games to play were winners away at Didsbury Reds. Calum Pakey from a headed pass by Luke Evans opened the scoring for the Town. A curling shot from Scott Joyce doubled the score before the Reds were awarded a penalty which Anthony Cunningham converted. Ben Pollard, making his way through the home defence netted Town’s third. At the other end Reds got their second with a Harry Hope shot. Rob Potter with a well hit shot from the edge of the area ended the scoring. Town have still four games to play and are still in the hunt for second spot.

Thursday night at Park Road Stadium the home of Cheadle Town, Offerton Green and Newall Green meet in the final of the NEC DFA cup final 7-45 pm K.O.
